Huawei has suffered some ill health over the last couple of years, with the company’s smartphones facing restrictions that sees sales mostly limited to China. That hasn’t stopped the company innovating, however, with a number of tablets, laptops and wearables looking to keep the brand in a healthy state globally.
In 2021 the company launched the Watch D, a wearable that offered a built-in inflatable cuff for blood pressure monitoring. Now, at the company’s Innovative Product Launch in Barcelona, we’ve seen the reveal of the next generation of this device – introducing a world’s first. The Huawei Watch D2 is the first smartwatch that can offer ambulatory blood pressure monitoring.

Refining the design a little – but still looking like a chunky Apple Watch – the Watch D2 has received NMPA (National Medical Products Administration) and MDR (Medical Device Regulation) certification for ambulatory monitoring. This type of blood pressure monitoring takes place over 24-hours, designed to give the wearer a better understanding of how their blood pressure changes throughout the day and night. Often this type of monitoring is performed by a chunky cuff that you have to wear, but packing this into a compact watch makes it a much less intrusive way to keep an eye on your blood pressure.
Elsewhere the Watch D2 has a 1.82-inch display where you’ll get access to all the other features you’d expect from a smartwatch, including a single tap where you can get a Health Overview based on nine different measurements from your body.
I had a quick test of the Watch D2 before the announcement and found that it gave blood pressure readings that appeared to be what I expected. Huawei says that the Watch D2 is 10 per cent more accurate than the previous Watch D. The battery is also said to last for 6 days in normal use.
If you want to get a better picture of your heart health, the Huawei Watch D2 is available for £349.99 from 19 September.
Huawei Watch GT 5 Series refines its health offering
The Huawei Watch GT 5 swings in to update the Watch GT 4 which launched late 2023, continuing with Pro and Standard editions of this feature-packed wearable. It also continues with Huawei’s focus on personal health, with the TruSense System on these watches taking an integrated approach to your health and fitness. The TruSense system covers six main body system using over 60 different health and fitness indicators to keep an eye on your health and wellbeing.

The new Watch GT 5 series sticks to Huawei’s Fashion Edge approach, with angular edges, a crown as well as touch control, while coming in materials all the way up to titanium. What’s interesting about Huawei’s watches is that they come in a range of styles and materials so you can get exactly the watch you’re looking for.
Huawei boasts 14 days of battery on the 46mm, while the 41mm and 42mm Pro claims 7 days of life, while boosting the tracking performance thanks to a newly-enhanced positioning system. Now with colour mapping for live navigation, you’ll be able to access Komoot routes, so you’ll be able to find a trail wherever you happen to be.
The Huawei Watch GT 5 will be available from £229.99, while the Watch GT 5 Pro will cost from £329.99.
